Contentsquare alternative with full replay, form analytics and prices you can approve online
Contentsquare Growth is affordable, but it replays only about 15 percent of sessions, leaves out form analysis and the API, and stops at 240,000 sessions. Everything past that is a Pro or Enterprise contract priced on a sales call. UserExplorer is a Contentsquare alternative for websites and web apps that records every session up to the plan limit, includes form analytics on every plan, and publishes prices up to 2 million sessions, with an AI researcher that reads the recordings for you.
- Every session up to the plan limit is replayable
- Form analytics on every plan, API from Scale
- Online checkout up to 2 million sessions
- AI researcher answers with evidence replays
- 1 Phone verification fails on mobile signup 31% of mobile signups 42 replays
- 2 Yearly toggle below the fold on /pricing 58% of paid search visitors 27 replays

Why teams leave
The Contentsquare limits that start the search for an alternative
Most teams do not leave because the product is weak. They leave because the plan they can buy online is missing the parts they need.

|---|---|---|
| Replays on the self serve plan | Growth captures 15 percent of sessions (at least 20,000 a month), Free captures 5 percent (at most 10,000) | Every session up to the plan limit, sampling only if you choose it |
| Form analytics | Pro and Enterprise only, custom price | Every plan, from Startup |
| API access and alerts | Pro and Enterprise only | API from Scale, published price |
| Largest plan you can buy online | Growth, 200,000 sessions for $739 a month | Enterprise, 2,000,000 sessions for $1,999 a month billed yearly |

The sampling problem
A 15 percent replay sample hides the one session you need
Here is how it plays out. A support ticket says the coupon field broke checkout on Safari for one customer. You search the replays and the session is not there, because Growth recorded only a slice of traffic that day. Heatmaps and funnel numbers are still counted on every visit, but the video you need to see the bug does not exist.
UserExplorer records every session up to your plan limit, and you only sample when you decide to stretch a smaller plan over the month. Session replay marks rage clicks, dead clicks and JavaScript errors on the timeline, so the visit from the ticket is one search away.
If your traffic is far above what you want to pay for, you can still set a sampling rate. The difference is that it is your setting, not a ceiling built into the plan.

What you get
The Pro features you get without a Pro contract
Field level form analytics
See which field makes buyers hesitate, retype or quit, on every plan. On Contentsquare this sits behind a Pro quote. Details on the form analytics page.
Replays you can actually find
Filter recordings by page, device, source, custom event, user property or frustration signal, so the visit a customer complained about is there.
Funnels that open the evidence
Each funnel analysis step opens the recordings of the people who dropped at that step.
Segmented heatmaps
Split a website heatmap by device, traffic source or visitors who reached checkout and left.
API and webhooks
Scale includes roles, the API and webhooks, so findings and events reach your own stack, at a price listed on the website.
An analyst that does the reading
Ask why mobile checkout dropped last week. The AI researcher ranks causes by sessions affected and links the replays that prove them.

Procurement
Skip the six week enterprise sales cycle
A Pro or Enterprise deal usually means a demo, a scoping call, a quote, a redline round and a security questionnaire before the first session is recorded. For a team that just needs full replay and form analytics on one store, that is a quarter lost.
UserExplorer plans are bought by card on the website, including the 2 million session Enterprise tier. Inputs are masked in the browser by default, consent mode waits for your own banner, and a DPA is ready for legal review. The security team can review all of it on the GDPR session replay page before anyone talks to sales.
Honest fit
When you should stay on Contentsquare
Stay if you are a large brand that uses the whole Experience Platform: native app analytics on iOS and Android, built in A/B testing, revenue attribution by channel and AI source, conversation intelligence across call center and chat. UserExplorer does none of the app, testing or call center parts, and we will not pretend otherwise.
Stay too if you record under 200,000 sessions, a 15 percent replay sample is enough, and you never need form analysis or an API. Contentsquare Growth at $39 to $591 a month billed yearly is fair value for that.
Switch when the missing piece is full replay, form analytics, an API or volume above 240,000 sessions, and the only path to it is a custom contract. That is the gap UserExplorer fills, from $49 a month billed yearly. If you are moving off the old Hotjar plans specifically, the Hotjar alternative page covers that migration.
Migration
How to switch from Contentsquare in one afternoon
Run both tags for two to four weeks so you keep a baseline for every funnel.
-
Step 1
Export what you want to keep
Save the reports, funnel definitions and zone screenshots you rely on. Recordings stay with Contentsquare and cannot be moved to another vendor.
-
Step 2
Install the UserExplorer snippet
Create an account, check out online and add one script to your site or tag manager next to the Contentsquare tag. Inputs are masked by default.
-
Step 3
Rebuild funnels, forms and heatmaps
Recreate checkout and signup funnels, turn on form analytics for your key forms and open heatmaps for top landing and product pages.
-
Step 4
Compare, then remove the old tag
Ask the AI researcher where users struggle most, check it against what you knew from Contentsquare, then take the old tag out before renewal.
FAQ
Questions teams ask before replacing Contentsquare
What is the best alternative to Contentsquare?
For websites and web apps that need full session replay, form analytics and an API without a custom contract, UserExplorer is a strong Contentsquare alternative, with published prices up to 2 million sessions from $49 a month billed yearly. For native app analytics and built in A/B testing, look at FullStory, Quantum Metric or staying on Contentsquare Enterprise.
Who are Contentsquare's competitors?
The tools most often compared with Contentsquare are FullStory, Quantum Metric, Glassbox, Microsoft Clarity, Mouseflow, Lucky Orange, PostHog, Amplitude and UserExplorer. Hotjar is no longer a competitor, because it is now part of Contentsquare and sold as its Experience Analytics plans.
How much does Contentsquare cost?
Contentsquare Experience Analytics has a Free plan for 200,000 sessions with 5 percent of sessions replayed, and a Growth plan from $49 a month for 7,000 sessions up to $739 a month for 200,000, with 20 percent off for yearly billing. Pro and Enterprise, which add form analysis, APIs and full replay, are quote only.
Is Contentsquare the same as Hotjar?
Yes, in practice. Contentsquare acquired Hotjar and now sells Hotjar's heatmaps and recordings as Contentsquare Experience Analytics, and hotjar.com pricing points to the Contentsquare pricing page. Surveys and feedback became a separate Voice of Customer product with its own bill.
Does Contentsquare record every session?
Not on the self serve plans. The Contentsquare pricing page lists replay capture of 5 percent of sessions (at most 10,000) on Free and 15 percent (at least 20,000) on Growth. Up to 100 percent capture is offered on the quote only Pro and Enterprise plans. Heatmaps and analytics still count all sessions.
Can I move my Contentsquare recordings to UserExplorer?
No. Session recordings are stored in each vendor's own format and cannot be imported elsewhere. Save the reports and funnel definitions you need, install UserExplorer next to the Contentsquare tag, and run both for a few weeks so you have overlapping data before the old contract ends.
Does UserExplorer track mobile apps like Contentsquare?
No. UserExplorer records websites and web apps, including single page apps and visits from mobile browsers. Contentsquare also covers native iOS and Android apps, so a mobile app first business should keep a tool with app SDKs.
